Abstract
987,952. Rolling. T. SENDZIMIR. Aug. 28, 1963, No. 34095/63. Heading B3M. A method of continuously rolling a slab to form a strip of increased width comprises feeding the slab into a planetary mill in the same plane as the issuing strip but at an angle to the direction of strip delivery, a side guide being positioned in front of the mill and in engagement with an edge of slab to absorb side thrust in the slab generated by the backward thrust of the planetary rolls. A slab can conveniently be fed to a first planetary mill and then to a second such mill, Fig. 8, the exit direction being parallel to the initial entry direction. A strip 10, Fig. 2, is fed by feed rolls 11 to a planetary mill, which includes work rolls 12 and backing rolls 15, at an angle α to the pass line of the mill. A guide 21, having a hardened face 23 and layer 22 of an insulator, and also a guide 21 pivotally attached to it with screw adjustment, take up the thrust on the strip and prevent edge cracking of the strip. The guides can be given a vibratory motion or a circulatory motion which is phased with the varying back thrust originating from the mill rolls. The vibration can be produced by means of cams or eccentrics, or by hydraulic or electromagnetic vibrations. The guide 21 is cooled by passing oil through it or by using a water spray. The strip 10 before reaching the mill is heated by induction coils 34 and guided by adjustable rollers 35. The mill housings 1 and the feed roll housings 2 are advantageously integral. When the backing rolls 15 are rotated backwards, Fig. 5, a desurfacing of the strip occurs, and the metal removed can be coiled at 37. Slab from a continuous casting machine 112, Fig. 8, passes through a furnace 116, feed rolls 114, a first planetary mill 117, guide rollers 127, a second planetary mill 126 and a finishing mill 135, and is finally coiled at 139. In order to vary the final strip width, the angle α can be varied by moving the mill 117. An alternative position is indicated in dotted lines. Specifications 655,190 and 935,342 are referred to.
