Abstract
Surgical adhesive tape for use in surgical operations comprises a support layer of woven or knitted fabric or a plastic foil or film, having on one side a pressure- and/or heat-sensitive adhesive layer and on the other side a pair of longitudinal parallel ridges or longitudinal parallel rows of projections or loops, the spacing between the rows or ridges being sufficient for the insertion of a scalpel. In use the tape is applied to the skin and an incision made through the tape and the skin together. After the operation, the sides of the incision are secured together by sewing, clipping or welding together the ridges or rows of projections or loops or by applying a layer of adhesive tape over the ridges or rows. The tape may have openings for exudate from the wound adjacent the ridges or rows. In a modification, two separate adhesive strips each having a ridge or row of projections along one edge are mounted on a cover sheet with the ridges or rows adjacent one another and spaced for the passage of a scalpel between them. The strips are applied to the skin and when the cover sheet has been removed, the skin is cut between the strips. The adhesive on the tape or a primer adhesive applied to the skin before the tape may contain a medicating agent. Strips of the tape may be attached at right-angles to the tape hardening the incision to serve as retractors. The ridges on each side of the incision may be secured together by a clip of E-shaped cross-section, the centre limb of the clip serving to space the ridges when clipped together by the outer limbs.ALSO:Adhesive tape comprises a support layer of woven or knitted fabric or a plastic foil or film, having on one side a pressure- and/or heat-sensitive adhesive layer and on the other side a pair of longitudinal parallel ridges or longitudinal parallel rows of projections or loops, the spacing between the rows or ridges being sufficient for the insertion of a scalpel. In a surgical operation, the tape is applied to the skin and an incision made through the tape and the skin together, the sides of the incision later being secured together by sewing, clipping or welding together the ridges or rows of projections and loops or by application of adhesive tape over the ridges or rows. In a modification, two separate adhesive strips each having a ridge or row of projections may be mounted on a cover sheet with the ridges or rows adjacent to one another, the cover sheet being removed after application of the strips to the body.
