Abstract

986,681. Gas heaters. METALLURGICAL ENGINEERS Ltd. Dec. 27, 1962 [Jan. 2, 1962], No. 198/62. Heading F4S. A heat exchanger formed as an upstanding cylindrical casing closed at the top comprises an outer metal cylinder 1 with a refractory lining 2, and two concentrically disposed metal cylinders 7, 8. Gas to be heated enters the heat exchanger at 5, flows up the channel formed between cylinders 7, 8, through radial ports 9 into annular collecting- chamber 10 and leaves through lateral outlet 4. Hot gas flows into cylinder 8 from the bottom of the heat exchanger and is directed by removable domed lid 3 around ports 9 into the annular channel between refractory lining 2 and cylinder 7. It then flows down said channel into annular collecting chamber 11 and leaves via outlet 6. Cylinders 7, 8 are mounted on ports 9 which in turn are mounted on a flanged ring 12. A substantially triangular ring 13 of heat insulating material is provided adjacent the upper and outer part of ring 12. Heat expansion/ contraction joints 14, 15 comprising flexible bellows are provided where indicated. The cross-sectional shape of ports 9 may be streamlined (Fig. 2, not shown).
