Abstract
<PICT:0986671/C4-C5/1> Apparatus for rendering fuel briquettes smokeless by treatment with an oxygen-containing gas comprises a fuel container 4, the bottom 9 of which is apertured to permit the passage of gases, and means for conducting gases under pressure upwardly or downwardly through the fuel when said container is charged, the apertured bottom 9 being inclined to the horizontal so that it can be loaded with fuel, e.g. coal briquettes, to a uniform depth by discharging thereon briquettes to form a natural slope, and the apparatus having openings 20 and 23 disposed to enable a charge of briquettes to be supplied to and discharged from the container under gravity. The container 4 may comprise means for altering the angle between the container bottom 9 and the horizontal; also the container may include means for reducing the rate of fall of the briquettes while the container is being filled, e.g. stepwise mounted grates 14...16, hanging chains 17...19 or similar flexible elements, or projections mounted through the apertured bottom. The container 4 includes partitions running parallel to the side walls of the container wherein the distance apart of the partitions is 20 to 25 cms. Control of the oxidation may be obtained by the introduction of water into the gas flow via the conduit 8, and cooling of the briquettes after the heating may be by spraying the gases and the briquettes with water from the sprays 21 and 22. The term briquette is used to denote any pressure-moulded fuel pieces, e.g. ovoids, and the natural slope formed by ovoids is 35 to 40 degrees. The temperature of the apparatus is between 200 DEG and 400 DEG C. After the container 4 has been charged, hot gases are provided by a burner 3 and circulated by a blower 2, air being provided, if desired, through a line 7. Specifications 722,495 and 812,822 are referred to.
