A coupling for connecting a shaft to a hollow cylindrical core upon which a web or tape may be wound, comprises a member 2 fitting on a squared end 1 of the shaft and having guide slots 3 parallel to the sides of the shaft for clamping rollers 5 which are provided with bolts 4 slidably engaged in oblique grooves 7 formed in a ring 8 which is mounted for limited angular movement relative to the member 2. A cylinder 10 to be clamped to the shaft is placed over the rollers 5 in an eccentric position, for example due to the weight of the cylinder for a non-vertical shaft, so that at least one of the rollers frictionally engages the internal surface of the cylinder. Clockwise rotation of the shaft 1 causes the roller 5 engaging the cylinder 10 to move along its slot 3, and hence due to the ring 8 causes all the rollers to move simultaneously into the dotted line position in Fig. 2 in which the cylinder 10 is centred on the shaft and clamped thereto. In the modification shown in Fig. 5, the coupling is effective for both directions of rotation of the shaft, and has rollers 15 slidably engaging slots 19 parallel to the sides of the shaft and also engaging radial slots 18 in a member 16 having limited angular play on the shaft. In this embodiment the rollers 15 are suitably shaped for engagement with the guide slots, the bolts 4 being dispensed with. In both embodiments the slots 3, 19 are disposed so that the rollers roll on the surfaces of the shaft 1. The rollers may be knurled or fluted or covered with rubber or other friction material.
