Abstract

Hydrocarbons are dehydrogenated in the presence of sulphur dioxide and, as catalyst, ferric oxide which may contain a minor amount of another metal or metalloid oxide. The dehydrogenation of butenes to butadiene is described at 400-700 DEG C. and 0.5-2 atmospheres with a volume ratio of sulphur dioxide to hydrocarbon of 0.1-2 : 1. Air or oxygen may also be present when the hydrocarbon : sulphur dioxide : oxygen as air ratio may be 1 : 0.2 : 0.4 to 1 : 1 : 1. Other oxides which may be added to the catalyst are the oxides of copper, tin, nickel, silver, antimony, bismuth, vanadium and molybdenum.
