Abstract

986,001. Liquid &c. applicators. CARTER PRODUCTS Inc. Nov. 6, 1961 [Nov. 22, 1960], No. 39729/61. Heading A5R. A device for applying liquid to the skin, and comprising a ball or roller applicator member, has a normally closed valve through which the liquid passes from the container to the applicator member. This valve tends to be closed by internal pressure within the container but is opened by external pressure applied to the ball or roller member. In one form the liquid container 2 has a flexible closure member 4 which retains the ball 8 by its inwardly directed walls 10. A transverse wall 6 extends across the inner chamber, between the ball and the container, and has a central slit 14 which is normally closed to prevent the passage of liquid owing to the resilience of the material and the stiffening effect of webs 20. Owing to the arched form of this wall 6, any pressure in the container 2 caused by squeezing or rising temperature results only in the sides of the slit being pressed more firmly together. However, external pressure on the ball 8 causes it to bear on projections 22 to cause the slit 6 to open and allow the liquid to pass to the ball. A reservoir chamber, filled by tilting the appliance, may be formed adjacent to the ball or roller.
