Abstract

985,709. Syphon-discharge water-waste preventers. CISTERNS Ltd. Jan. 30, 1964 [Feb. 1, 1963], No. 4268/63. Heading E1C. A syphon for a flushing cistern comprises a cylinder 1 with an open bottom below the water level therein, and a top syphon-shaped outlet 4, 5 for syphoned water, a piston 2 in the cylinder 1 associated with a one-way valve, namely a disc 2b, moved upward to initiate syphoning, and returnable against the upward flow through the valve 2b, and a normally-closed valve 9, in the cylinder wall, opened by the piston 2 to admit air to the cylinder 1 when the piston 2 is in a predetermined position. The valve 2b has an operating member 10 and the aperture opened by it is so small that if the piston is returned immediately after its upward stroke, insufficient air enters to stop the syphoning. The piston has a rigid head on a spider 2a, the annulus so formed being sealed by the flexible disc 2b, preventing downward movement of water in the cylinder but flexing for upward movement thereof. Variation of the amount syphoned may be obtained by adjusting the position of the seating of the valve 9.
