Abstract

985,545. Dishwashing machines. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. Dec. 10, 1963 [Dec. 31, 1962], No. 48637/63. Heading A4F. Apparatus for dispensing detergent into a dishwashing machine comprises a container 23 intermittently rotatable to discharge material sequentially from two pockets 35.1, 35.2 therein and a shield 36 covering the pockets to prevent moisture entering thereinto during a dishwashing operation and to retain the material in one pocket while the other is discharging. The dishwashing machine is provided with an electric control system, and the rotation of the container 23 is regulated by an escapement wheel 25 which is rotated 90 degrees counterclockwise (as seen in Fig. 5) by a spring 43 during admission of water for the first wash when a bimetal strip 58 is electrically heated and flexes to disengage a finger 56 from a tooth 53 on an inner part 47 of the wheel 25, to discharge detergent from the pocket 35.1, the rotation being halted by the engagement of the finger 56 with a tooth 50 inside the wheel rim. Immediately after commencement of the first wash the bi-metal circuit is broken, and the finger 56 releases the tooth 50 and comes into the path of a tooth 54 to halt the escapement wheel after about a 30 degrees rotation, to shake loose any detergent remaining in the pocket 35.1. After drainage of the used washing liquid a second wash is initiated and the bi-metal strip 58 is again heated so that the finger 56 disengages from the tooth 54 and comes into the path of a tooth 51, whereby the container 23 rotates through about 60 degrees to discharge detergent from the cup 35.2. The bimetal strip 58 is cooled once more, and the wheel 25 rotates about 20 degrees until the finger 56 engages a tooth 55. Finally during the introduction of rinse water the tooth 55 is released and the wheel 25 rotates until a web 48 thereof engages the finger 56. During this final movement a scoop 62 carried by the wheel 25 collects wetting agent from a container 12 and throws it into a cup (not shown) from which it discharges into the washing chamber.
