Abstract
The invention comprises steroids of the general formula <FORM:0985482/C2/1> wherein Y represents hydrogen or the methyl group and Z represents a hydroxymethylene, alkanoyloxymethylene, alkyl substituted hydroxymethylene (C(a -alkyl)OH), carbonyl or ethynyl substituted hydroxymethylene (C(a -CCH)OH) group, and a process for the preparation of steroids of the general formula <FORM:0985482/C2/2> wherein Y and R have the above significance, by treating 2-alkoxyoxalyl-steroids of the general formula <FORM:0985482/C2/3> wherein Y and R have the above significance, with formaldehyde in the presence of a basic catalyst, a process for the production of steroids of the general formula <FORM:0985482/C2/4> wherein Y has the above significance, by acylating the corresponding 17b -hydroxy-steroid, and a process for the preparation of steroids of the general formula <FORM:0985482/C2/5> wherein Y has the above significance, by oxidizing the corresponding 17b -hydroxy compound. The alkyl groups contain 1 to 3 carbon atoms and the alkanoyloxy groups contain not more than 4 carbon atoms. Therapeutic compositions suitable for oral or parenteral administration having anabolic activity contain as the active ingredient a steroid of the first general formula above. 2-Alkoxyoxalyl-steroids of the third general formula above are prepared by treating the corresponding steroids unsubstituted at the 2-position with an excess of dialkyl oxalate.
