Abstract
A core for metal casting is made from a slurry comprising alcohol, ethyl silicate solution, water, and a mineral acid mixed with feldspar, lead borate glass frit and magnesia. A typical liquid mix comprises (by weight) 51% isopropyl alcohol, 42% ethyl silicate, 6.6% water, and 0.4% hydrochloric acid. The slurry contains 77% (by weight) of solids which may have a zircon, silica, alumina or firebrick grog base and detailed examples are given of each.
