Abstract
Polypropylene is made by forming a slurry of a supported chromium oxide catalyst in liquid propylene, adding an organoaluminium compound containing at least two hydrocarbon radicals, and subjecting the resulting mixture, with or without the addition of further propylene, to polymerization conditions whilst maintaining the propylene in the liquid phase. The supported chromium oxide prior to use as a catalyst, is preferably calcined at a temperature of from 200 DEG to 600 DEG C., and then vacuum-treated at a pressure below 100 mms. of mercury. The support for the chromium oxide may be activated carbon, alumina, magnesia, titania, zirconia, silica, or clays. The exemplified aluminium compound is aluminium triisobutyl. The polymer may be fractionated, using n-hexane. Specification 786,014 is referred to.
