Abstract
983,315. Gas turbine engines; turbines. G. BAYARD. June 8, 1962 [June 14, 1961], No. 22288/62. Addition to 879,749. Headings F1G and F1T. The invention relates to an arrangement for starting a gas turbine engine and is an improvement in or modification of the invention set forth in the parent Specification. The starter assembly comprises a gas generator of the gas turbine type and a starter turbine 5, the turbine 5 being connected to the main gas turbine engine by speed reduction gearing and a clutch 6. The gas generator comprises an air compressor 2 of the centrifugal type and a turbine 1 mounted on a common shaft 3, the air from the compressor passing through a diffuser 17 and between flow-straightening vanes 18 to the combustion equipment 4 which is of annular contra-flow type, the gases discharging from the combustion chamber into the turbines 1 and 5. The whole starter assembly is disposed within the fairing 8 of the main gas turbine engine. The starter assembly is itself started by means of an electric motor 9 connected thereto by an over-running device 15. Air enters the compressor 2 through openings 12 in the fairing 8, the openings being closed by means of flaps 14 when the starter is not in use. The exhaust gases from the turbine discharge through two ducts 24 into the intake of the main engine.
