Abstract

983,218. Fuel elements. UNITED KINGDOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY. May 30, 1963 [May 30, 1962; May 14,1963], Nos. 20925/62 and 18977/63. Heading G6C. A herringbone pattern finned fuel element sheath has a number of radially and longitudinally spaced lugs projecting radially beyond the surface of the fins to contact the walls of a reactor fuel channel in which a fuel element including said sheath is placed. The sheath is particularly suited for use in a gas cooled graphite moderated reactor, the fuel is preferably uranium metal, and the can magnesium alloy. The lugs may be integral or fabricated and are preferably situated along the lines of demarcation between adjacent sets of fins. The end caps 5, 7 have cup and cone housings for engagement with adjacent fuel elements and the lead-in lugs have curved forward edges to prevent snagging during loading; similar provision is made on the adjacent trailing edges to prevent snagging during withdrawal. Some of the lugs may be of increased thickness to provide anchorage for thermocouple leads (Fig. 3, not shown). There is a slight clearance between the fuel channel wall and the lugs 10, 11 which is taken up before significant bowing of the element takes place; however, to prevent rattle in event of no bowing taking place at all, a spring urged lever 19 forces the lugs opposite against the channel wall. In a modification (Fig. 4, not shown) the lugs 10, 11, instead of being rectangular in side elevation as in Fig. 1, are of trapezoidal shape.
