Abstract

982,276. Scouring apparatus; erosion preventing. UNITED STATES RUBBER CO. March 12, 1963 [May 4, 1962], No. 9687/63. Headings E1F and EIH. A dredging apparatus, which may be used to compensate for erosion, is adapted, on suspension in a liquid undergoing wave motion, to transport a particulate in a bed beneath the liquid from one zone of the bed to another, which apparatus comprises a baffle valved so as to permit flow of liquid therethrough in one direction only and means for suspending the baffle in the liquid at a level adjacent to the bed at a selected point above the bed. Fig. 8 shows the apparatus anchored in still water above the bed 62 of material to be dredged. The baffle 20 carrying valve panels 26 is supported by a member 16 carried by floats 14. When a wave crest advances towards the shore (Fig. 9) water flows through the baffle in the direction of the arrows. As the wave trough then advances (Fig. 10), the valve panels close and the water is deflected under the baffle and thereby agitated so that particles 64 are lifted from the bed 62. The next wave crest (Fig. 11) causes the particles to be carried through the baffle and deposited in the zone 66. As shown in Fig. 12 material is transported from the zone 68 to build up a desposit in zone 66. Fig. 19 shows the dredging baffle secured to anchors 58 by the ropes 56, 57, the anchoring loads being reduced by the incorporation of a seawardly valved shoreward baffle 76. Specification 632,722 is referred to.
