Abstract
982,135. Metal melting furnaces. I. PROPERZI. Feb. 26, 1962 [March 4, 1961], No. 7450/62. Heading F4B. [Also in Division H5] Metal 3, e.g. copper, to be melted in a furnace is completely covered by a layer 9 of graphite or carbon powder through which the heating current passes, the layer 9 thus acting as a heating resistance and as a protective layer which also maintains a reducing atmosphere in contact with the charge. In the three-phase furnace shown three electrodes 5 are each supported in a well in an upper part 4 of the furnace provided with rollers which run on rails 17 supported by brackets 23 from a lower part 16 of the furnace enclosing an elongated melting basin 1 which is provided with a pouring spout (not shown) and may contain a floor 2 of carbon or silicon carbide. An hydraulic piston 19 enables the furnace to be tilted about pivots 20 on an axis A-A near the pouring spout. The current bars 6 of each electrode 5 are secured to a bar 11 supported from the furnace part 4 by insulated screws 12 and 13 permitting vertical adjustment of the electrode. Each bar 11 is connected by leads 14 to a transformer bar 15. Each electrode 5 has a tapering end 7 to reduce the loss of heat through the electrode. Alternative forms of electrode are described (Figs. 6-9, not shown). When charging and discharging the furnace, the upper part 4 is moved to the right, loss of powder 4 from the upper portion being prevented by a portion 18 of the lower part 16. In a modified construction (Fig. 5, not shown) the lower part 16 is duplicated, so that two melting basins 1 are served by one electrode system, which may include any number of electrodes depending on the number of phases of the supply.
