Abstract

982,091. Photo-electric control systems. AMF INTERNATIONAL Ltd. June 15, 1961 [June 17, 1960], No. 21381/60. Heading G1A. The force exerted on a pan V at one end of an arm A is opposed by the torque due to a current in the coil D of a galvonometer movement, the current being measured as an indication of the force and being supplied by a bridge circuit containing two phototransistors G, H, whose illumination from a source L and lens M is varied by a wedge shaped shutter or aperture B at the other end of the arm A. The controlling torque exerted by the spring E of the galvonometer movement may be set by a calibrated knob F so that variations of force from the set value may be measured. The phototransistors are mounted together in a block which may be moved either with or without the source L in the direction of the axis of symmetry of the wedge shape of the aperture or shutter to control their sensitivity. The meter indicating the current through the coil D may have a variable shunt to control its sensitivity and it may be incorporated in an R-C circuit to reduce instability in the system. The device may be used for weighing single articles, for measuring in terms of force, the velocity of a fluid or stream of particles directed on to a vane in place of the pan V, or (by means of a current integrating meter) to measure the average weight of series of articles. Alternatively the signal may be fed to a pulse height analyser or "kick sorter" of known type to grade articles according to weight.
