Abstract
982,023. Welding by fusion; straightening. ENGLISH ELECTRIC CO. Ltd. June 23, 1961 [June 24, 1960], No. 22146/60. Headings B3E and B3R. In arc-welding apparatus electrode wire or rod is fed to the arc by feed rolls driven by an electric motor having a hollow rotor through which the wire or rod passes to a detachable welding head. Wire 23 is drawn from a coil through straightening rolls 26, 27, 28 and the hollow rotor 17 by feed rolls 49 mounted on spring-loaded pivoted links 47 and connected to the motor by gearing comprising a hollow worm 38 and apicyclic gears 35. The wire 23 passes out through a detachable rigid guide 53 carrying spring-loaded contact shoes 55 and a hopper 57 for flux. Cooling air for the motor is circulated through ports 59, 60 by a fan 58. The straightener, motor and feed rolls may be constructed as three separate interchangeable units. The straightener unit may be replaced by a rod magazine which automatically supplies rods to the feed rolls. The guide 53 may be interchangeable with a flexible guide terminating in a pistol-type welding gun, a spot welding device or an inert gas-shielded arcwelding device. In the latter case the ports 60 are blanked off and inert gas from a manifold is supplied through the ports 59 to cool the motor and passes through the guide 53 to the arc.
