981,968. Printing surfaces. THOMAS DE LA RUE ENGINEERING Ltd. Aug. 6, 1963 [Aug. 8, 1962], No. 30383/62. Heading B6C. A printing cylinder assembly suitable for use in an intaglio printing machine comprises a transversely grooved cylinder 7, a plurality of thin intaglio printing plates 1 having a thickness of less than 0À125 of an inch, clamping bars 2 adapted to be secured within the transverse grooves of the cylinder, there being one bar under the end of each plate, and axially slidable locking bars 16 adapted to engage between each pair of adjacent clamping bars 2 and the cylinder assembly. Each transverse T-shaped slot or groove 8 contains a clamping member 9, having a groove 11, a series of vertical clearances 12 and associated wedge surfaces 13, and a plate 10 having a series of openings 14. Axial movement of the bar 16 causes tapered surfaces on the bar to engage the surfaces 13 so as to exert a downward force on the top of the bar causing the top part of its I-section to wedge against the bottom of a groove 4, with the result that the plates are firmly secured to the cylinder. Circumferential adjustment of the plates is provided by a series of screws 17 located within holes 6 in the bars 2.
