Abstract

A storable composition comprises a mixture of (A) an unsaturated polyester containing free OH groups derived from an olefinically unsaturated at least dicarboxylic acid and an excess of an at least dihydric alcohol and (B) a polyisocyanate dissolved in styrene, said mixture having incorporated therein a C1-4 alcohol which is added either to the polyisocyanate before admixture with the polyester or to the mixture of polyester and isocyanate. The composition may comprise a mixture of the polyester (A) with a reaction product of a similar polyester and a polyisocyanate which has had at least 75% of the isocyanate groups converted to urethane groups with the C1-4 alcohol in weight proportions between 1: 1 and 95: 5. The polyester may be derived from C2-8 glycols, glycerol, pentaerythritol, trimethylol propane, hexane-triol, dior tetra-ethylene glycol or sorbitol and maleic, fumaric, itaconic, tetrahydrophthalic, tetra-chlorotetrahydrophthalic or aconitic acid or a Diels-Alder reaction product thereof with an olefine. Up to 50 mol. per cent of the unsaturated acid may be replaced by saturated or aliphatic acids. Specified isocyanates are toluylene, cyclohexylene, 4,41-dicyclohexylmethane, hexamethylene, and 1,4-diphenylmethane diisocyanates and polyisocyanates obtainable by reacting these with the polyols mentioned above. Specified C1-4 alcohols are the alkanols. Hardening catalysts specified are benzoyl, cyclohexanol, t-butyl and di-t-butyl peroxides which may be used with a co-catalyst, e.g. dimethylamine, N-dimethyl-toluidine, -xylidene or -naphthylamine, triethylamine or tributylamine. Specified fillers are quartz, barium sulphate, silicon carbide, coke powder, graphite and slate powder. Specification 845,529 is referred to.
