981,439. Reciprocating motors and generators. TRENCH ELECTRIC Ltd. March 27, 1962, No. 11768/62. Heading H2A. An armature for an axially reciprocating electromagnetic motor or generator comprises a permanent magnet 17 surrounded by an electrically conductive non-magnetizable member 19 which provides a short-circuit path for any current induced in the member by virtue of its movement in a magnetic flux. In one embodiment, the armature comprises a number of such magnets 17 each separated by polepieces 18, and is held in position in the stator by springs 25, having a resonant frequency the same as the oscillating frequency, which allow axial movement in either direction. The stator is provided with coils 14 and has a number of gaps 16, one associated with each coil compartment, to give flux paths of higher reluctance than the remainder of the path through the stator.
