Abstract

981,244. Heat storage hot water boilers. T. BAXTER. April 8, 1963 [April 9, 1962; Jan. 31, 1963], Nos. 13574/62 and 4019/63. Heading F4U. In an electrically heated hot water boiler heat is transferred to a water boiler unit from a heat storage block unit having electric heaters mounted in housings at different locations in the unit, and heat conductance elements are disposed within the block unit and in adjustable connection with the water boiler unit to collect the heat from the block and pass it to the boiler unit, said connections including a control for adjusting the rate of heat transfer to the boiler unit. In Fig. 1, the device comprises a series of interfitting heat storage blocks SB forming a block unit, each of a size such as 24 in. x 24 in. x 5 in. deep, and with corresponding recesses H1 in their upper and lower surfaces such that an electric heater may be inserted into the recess between two blocks. The joints between blocks are lined with heat conducting sheets or rods which transmit heat to a vertical heat conductance tube R. The heat is transferred from this tube R to a hot water boiler HEU by a finned tube F. The rate of heat transfer is controlled by raising or lowering an upper, wider section of tube R by a cable and pulley system operated by a thermostatic device acting on a weight suspended beside the block unit. The unit is surrounded by lagging on all sides. The heat conductance tubes may be replaced by channels through which air can be forced. In Fig. 3, the structure is basically similar except for the top heat-exchange section, and the heat conductance tubes. The tubes 25 are fixed to an upper heat transfer plate and are of tubular interfitting, telescopic construction, the diameter lessening with depth. The heat transfer is controlled by pivoted dampers 30 connected to a link system, the dampers being beneath a water boiler 28. -When fully open said dampers are in connection with the upper and lower surfaces of the heat transfer plate and the boiler respectively, and heat can be conveyed by conduction and radiation. When closed, radiated heat from the transfer plate is reflected from the polished copper surface of the damper. In a modification, electric heaters may be housed in alternate blocks, the other blocks being slightly narrower and of less coarse grain. In another modification, there may be a network of horizontal conducting plates joined by edge flanges to vertical plates and rods, the latter being joined to the top heat transfer plate. Specification 967,835 is referred to.
