Abstract
981,207. Vehicle headlamps. R. MICKLEY. Oct. 4, 1962 [Oct. 9, 1961], No. 37585/62. Heading H1F. An electric lamp comprises a parabolic reflector, a filament extending in the horizontal plane containing the optical axis of the reflector from a point in front of the focal point to a point to the rear thereof or extending transversely through the focal point and an upper screen having a first portion extending above the filament in a plane parallel to the horizontal plane containing the optical axis from a point to the rear of the filament up to but not beyond the focal plane and a second portion between the apex of the reflector and the filament extending from the first portion to but not beyond the horizontal plane containing the optical axis. A second screen may be arranged below the filament having a first portion parallel to the horizontal plane containing the optical axis and extending from a point in front of the filament up to but not beyond the focal plane and a second portion in front of the filament extending from the first portion to but not beyond the horizontal plane containing the optical axis. Either screen may extend more on one side of the optical axis than on the other side which is directed towards the oncoming traffic. The screens may be mirror coated internally and dulled externally. The filament may be stirrup-shaped with the open end towards the apex of the reflector, a straight filament for the short-distance light being arranged between the arms of the stirrup. Alternatively, a straight filament for longdistance light may be used, two filaments for short-distance light being arranged one on each side of this. The long-distance filament may also be arranged transversely through the focal point, the filament for the short-distance light being arranged behind the focal point and below the plane of the first filament. Fig. 1 shows the effect of the screening, light from the filament 2 being prevented by the screens 5, 6 from reaching the areas 10, 19 of the reflector. Figs. 4 and 5 show a stirrup shaped main filament 3, a short-range filament 9 and upper and lower screens 6, 5, respectively, viewed from above and below, the lower screen 5 extending more on the side of the optical axis 1 remote from the traffic.
