Abstract

<PICT:0981182/C6-C7/1> Acicular particles of plus 200 mesh of aluminium or aluminium based alloys are produced by centrifugally casting the molten metal from a perforated pot which is rotated at such a speed, e.g. 1700-8000 r.p.m., that the particles are centrifugally thrown horizontally at least six feet in a fall of 1 1/2 feet. The particles produced range in size from 5-100 mesh and by varying the size of the perforations of the casting pot and the speed of rotation the size range may be regulated. The apparatus comprises a centrifugal casting pot 12, with radially extending apertures 38 ranging from 1/8 -0.040 inch diameter, driven by motor 22 mounted in a separate chamber 26 in a tank 30. Molten aluminium is tapped from furnace 40 via conduit 44 into the pot 12 and the granulated particles are centrifugally thrown into the water bath 28. Alternatively the particles may be collected in an air blower system. The preferred casting temperature is 1300-1350 DEG F. and the pot 12 is preheated to this temperature range. Aluminium based alloys containing Cu, Mg, Cr or Zn may be granulated. Specification 947,724 is referred to.
