980,961. Unreeling; straightening. F. GERST. Aug. 16, 1962 [Aug. 25, 1961], No. 31521/62. Heading B3E. An unwinding reel, having draw-off means for straightening wire drawn off a coil of wire fitted to the reel, includes a gripper assembly having a mouth disposed before the draw-off means for clamping the end of the wire and which is controllably movable to convey the clamped wire end to the draw-off means, the mouth being disposed radially of the coil at a first position at which it is to receive or clamp the wire end but being adapted to pivot during the controlled movement to align the clamped wire end with the entry to the draw-off means so as to facilitate engagement of the wire end therewith. The end of a coil 30 of wire on a rotatably mounted reel drum 3 is introduced by cable tackle 32, 33 into a mouth 12 of a gripper assembly 11 positioned so that the mouth 12 is radial of the coil 30. The wire is then clamped in the gripper means 11 by a member 13 moved by a cam 25 and the cable 33 released. A carriage 15 in which the gripper means 11 is rotatably mounted is then moved horizontally to carry the wire end to straightening rolls 7, 8, the base 18 of the gripper means 11 running in a slot 17 shaped so that gripper means 11 pivots and the wire is presented properly to the rolls 7, 8. The rolls 7, 8 are then closed on the wire end by adjusting an eccentric bearing of the roll 8 and the wire is released from the gripper means 11. The wire is then pulled by the roll 7, which is driven, over a roll 9 and guide 10 to the rolls 7, 8 to be straightened thereby.
