Abstract
980,064. Determining the mass of liquid in a container. SIMMONDS PRECISION PRODUCTS Inc. April 24, 1961, No. 14782/61. Heading G1N. In a capacitance type fluid measuring apparatus for indicating the mass in a tank of a fluid having a relationship between its dielectric constant (K) and density (D) defined by the equation K-1= (bD)<SP>n</SP> where b and n are constants with n other than 0 or 1, the current through the measuring capacitor Ct Fig. 2 is balanced by the current through a fixed capacitor Ce equal to that through the total dry capacitance of the measuring capacitor and the current through a variable capacitor Cr which is adjusted by means 42 responsive to unbalance, an indication proportional to the n th root of the balancing adjustment being given by the balancing means in an indicator 44 to indicate the mass of fluid in the container. A mathematical analysis is given together with approximate values for b and n. The nth root may be the result of a non-linear scale or a non-linear potentiometer 32, and the electrodes of the measuring capacitor may have a width A<SP>1</SP> at any height H defined by the equation A<SP>1</SP>α (d|f(H)|<SP>n</SP>/dH). A plate shape is exemplified.
