Abstract
980,036. Spinnerets. MONSANTO CO. June 24, 1963 [June 25, 1962], No. 24999/63. Heading B6B. A laminated spinneret 10 useful in making conjugate filaments comprises a double-feed end block 12, a single feed end block 14 and a stack of plates comprising alternate orifice plates 36 (Fig. 3) and spacer plates 48 (Fig. 4). Orifice plates 36 each have a distribution aperture 45 and a Y-shaped void 38 terminating in a slot 40. Spacer plates 48 each have three distribution apertures 46. In stacking, alternate orifice plates are reversed so as to offset the slots 40 which form extrusion orifices. A spinning composition supplied to the single feed end block 14 is conveyed to the middle distribution channel 51 formed of the central apertures 46 of the spacer plates and the branches 44 of the Y- shaped voids of the orifice plates. A second spinning composition supplied to the double-feed end block 12 which may be the same as the first spinning composition, or different if conjugate filaments are desired, is conveyed by the branched portions 28 and 30 of the distribution passage 26 to the two outermost distribution channels 50 and 52. Each of these channels is formed of the branches 42 of the Y-shaped voids of alternate orifice plates, and the outermost channels 46 of the spacer plates 48. Hence the two compositions merge and exit from the orifices 40 as conjugate filaments. Using sufficiently thick orifice plates, the spacer plates may be omitted. A given orifice slot 40 may be supplied by more than two feeder passages, a third spinning composition thus being supplied to slot 40. In a modification (Figs. 6 to 8), spacer plates 48 (Fig. 8) are interposed between orifice plates 36, alternate orifice plates being reversed (Figs. 6 and 7) so as to offset the slots 40, and on either, or both, sides of each orifice plate a continuous wave-like recess is formed, embracing each pair of feeder passages 42, 44, the crest of the recess registering with the distribution apertures 46 in spacer plate 48 feeding passages 42 and 44 when the orifice and spacer plates are stacked in alignment, and the bottom of the recess communicating with the edge of the orifice plate by way of slot 40 which defines a spinning orifice.
