Abstract

A method of bonding a metal part to a ceramic body comprises heating in an inert atmosphere an assembly of the two and between them a first and a second different metallic layers, the first of which, adjacent to the ceramic body, being a reacting material e.g. Zr or Ti, the second adjacent to the metal being a metal, e.g. Au, Au-Ag, Ag-Cu, Au-Ni, capable of soldering to or alloying with the metal body the heating being at a temperature such that a solid metal separating layer, either initially separate or formed by part of the second metallic layer, is present at all times, eutectics being formed between the separating layer and the first metallic layer and the <PICT:0979811/C1/1> <PICT:0979811/C1/2> second layer or the metal part. Fig. 2 shows a Ti-foil 10 and a Cu-foil 9, placed between a metal body M and a ceramic body K. After heating, when the assembly is cooled the composition of the metal layers change as shown below the line BB1. The foil 9 forms an alloy 911 with the metal M, the foil 10 bonds to the ceramic K and forms an alloy 101 with the foil 9; between 911 and 101 a barrier layer 91 is created by alloying of the foils 9 and 10. In an alternative arrangement shown in Fig. 1, there is provided a hard metal foil 1, a reacting metal 3 and an intermediate metal foil 2. After heating, the foil 2 bonds to M and alloys with 2 changing to 11 while the foil 3 bonds to K and changes in composition to 31 by alloying with 2, forming a similar barrier layer 21. The barrier layer is stated to prevent the reactive layer and the hard solder layer from forming a homogeneous, brittle metal and thus makes it possible for the hard metal to take up forces resulting from the different coefficients of expansion of the ceramic and the metal body when temperature changes occur.
