[Also in Division H2] A variable speed mechanism comprises an input shaft 7 provided with a sun gear 1, an output shaft 8 with a sun gear 4, coaxial with the input shaft, and an intermediate shaft 17 concentric with the input shaft having a sun gear 6, gears 6, 1, 4 having increasing diameters and meshing with planet gears 5, 2, 3 respectively. The input and control shafts are each coupled to a rotational element 11, 12 having polepieces between which is a stationary member 13 having a separately excited D.C. winding 15 and a self-excited series winding 16. Energization of the D.C. winding causes a braking effect on element 11 and an accelerating effect on shaft 7 which reduces the power input even though the speed may not change. The braking effect thus causes the output shaft speed to change. The elements 11-13 may be replaced by a friction or fluid type element.
