Abstract
A water-laid fibrous web, e.g. of paper, comprises a synthetic, artifically produced, homogeneous, hydrophilic binder in the form of extruded fibres of a water-insoluble, alkali-soluble cellulose ether having a degree of substitution (D.S.), expressed as substituent groups per anhydroglucose unit of cellulose, between 0.10 and 0.60. The web may contain at least 1.0% of the binding fibres mixed with natural paper-making fibres, such as wood pulp fibres, and/or non-fibrillatable synthetic fibres, such as viscose rayon, cellulose acetate, nylon, vinyl resin, vinylidene resin and polyester resin fibres. Suitable cellulose ethers are:- carboxymethyl cellulose, carboxyethyl cellulose, e.g. prepared as described in U.S.A. Specification 2,511,060, carboxypropyl cellulose, hydroxyethyl cellulose, hydroxypropyl cellulose, hydroxybutyl cellulose, hydroxyamyl cellulose, carboxymethylcarboxyethyl cellulose, hydroxyethyl-hydroxypropyl cellulose, hydroxyethyl-carboxyethyl cellulose, methyl-carboxyethyl cellulose and methylhydroxyethyl cellulose. A urea-formaldehyde resin may be incorporated in the cellulose ether. The composition, physical properties, e.g. standard test data, of pulps and webs made according to the invention are set forth in Tables I to XI and illustrated in Figs. 1 to 5 (not shown).
