Abstract
978,780. Hydrodynamic couplings. FORD MOTOR CO. Ltd. Dec. 18, 1963 [Dec. 28, 1962], No. 49944/63. Heading F2C. In a hydrodynamic coupling having an exhaust valve 12 centrifugally and spring- biased in the open position for emptying the fluid from a working chamber 52 to render the coupling inoperative, the chamber 52 is filled from a pump 44 through an outlet 50 to a manifold 86 which is connected by two passages 58 and 84 arranged in parallel and directly connected to the working chamber 52 and exhaust valve 12 respectively, a restrictor 88 located in the passage 58 initially creating a pressure differential either side thereof so that fluid pressure in the passage 84 closes the valve 12 whilst fluid pressure metered through the restrictor 88 gradually equalizes as the chamber 52 fills up. The coupling is emptied by connecting the pump outlet 50 to exhaust, the fluid in the passage 84 exhausting through outlet 50 permitting the valve 12 to open and connect a port 64 with an exhaust port 70.
