In a continuous beam structure for supporting loads movable on the structure such as rolling loads of a crane track, the continuous beam is connected to supports spaced along its length through the intermediary of hydraulic or pneumatic supporting elements each capable of yielding under load and each such element is connected to an hydraulic or pneumatic counterpressure device independent of the supporting structure to effect a pre-loading of the elements. In the arrangement shown in Figs. 1 and 2, a rail 1 is supported on stanchions 2 through the intermediary of an hydraulic piston 9 and cylinder 10, supports 3. The supports 3 are connected singly or in groups by a pressure line 4 to a counter-pressure system 5 operating under a dead-weight 6. Up to the limit of the pressure in the system the supporting structure acts as a continuous beam with rigid supports, but above the limit the downward movement of the rail 1 and hence the piston 9 acts, through the pressure medium, against the weight 6. In an alternative arrangement shown in Fig. 3, the system 5 is replaced by a piston 20 and cylinder 15 connected to a pivoted lever 16 connected to a weight 17 in a cylinder 18 immersed in a fluid in a container 19.
