Abstract

<PICT:0978334/C4-C5/1> A process for gasifying coal dust in suspension by means of oxygen in co-current with or without steam, comprises performing the gasification at such a temperature, e.g. 1600 DEG C., that most of the ash evaporates, and cooling the mixture of ash vapours and gas produced by water sprays 6 in the apparatus to condense and granulate the ash for disposal in the solid state via a lock system 8. The coal, oxygen and steam enter through opposed nozzles 3, gas leaving at 7, and any liquid slag produced dropping off an edge 4 into a chamber 5. The apparatus is preferably operated at 5 to 35 atmospheres pressure.
