Abstract

978,129. Tyre with coloured plies. GOODYEAR TIRE & RUBBER CO. Sept. 21, 1962 [Nov. 30, 1961], No. 35965/62. Heading B7C. A conventional pneumatic tyre has synthetic filamentary material, of colour contrasting with the rubber and the reinforcing plies, located circumferentially at depth where its emergence will indicate that the tread is worn and needs renewal. In Fig. 2 the coloured layer is a tread ply 28, other tread plies 26, 27 being dyed to match the tread stock 25. Fig. 1 (not shown) illustrates the coloured layer closest to the tread surface, where it could replace or form the breaker strip. The synthetic material may be in the form of twisted or untwisted yarns or woven fabrics or short lengths, and may be embedded in a rubber sheet to form the ply 28. The coloured layer also indicates when sufficient material has been removed by buffing in a retreading operation.
