Abstract
A process for the manufacture of monopersulphate salts comprises reacting monopersulphuric acid with an "alkali," as defined, in a solvent at least the major proportion of which is a primary alcohol of not more than eight carbon atoms. An "alkali" is defined as a substance capable of neutralizing an acid to form a salt. Ammonia, and hy droxides, bicarbonates, and carbonates of ammonia, alkali metals, or magnesium, or mixtures thereof, are specified. The solvent may contain a minor proportion of an ester formed from a primary alcohol containing not more than eight carbon atoms and an aliphatic acid containing not more than four carbon atoms. An alkali metal and/or ammonium sulphate and/or bisulphate may be added to the reaction mixture. Preferably, the temperature is maintained below 30 DEG C. The ammonia may be introduced by bubbling. Otherwise the alkali may be introduced as a solid or in solution in water and/or alcohol.
