Abstract
A method of sensitizing a binder free photosensitive layer, especially a particulate layer, of a silver halide, comprises depositing on said layer a further binder free layer of an element (other than Group VIIa of the Periodic Table, Hg and those elements which are gaseous at room temperature) e.g. Al, Sb, As, Ba, Be, Bi, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, Ga, Ge, Au, Ir, Mn, Mg, Nd, Ni, Pb, Pd, Pr, Pt, Sa, Se, Si, Ag, Na, S, Te, Sn, Ti, Tl, V or Zn. The elements may be applied by vapour deposition and the deposition of S from a colloidal solution in dioxane and S or Se from a solution in dimethyl sulphoxide by evaporation of the solvent is also described. A post-treatment of the coated surface with a solution of ammonium chloroiridite is also disclosed. Specifications 968,453 and 968,454 are referred to.
