Abstract

Hydrocarbons containing a >CH-CH< group are dehydrogenated by heating to 400-800 DEG C. in the vapour phase with at least 1/4 mol. of oxygen per mol. of hydrocarbon and an amount of a bromine-liberating material sufficient to provide more than 0.001 mol. of bromine per mol. of hydrocarbon, the partial pressure of the hydrocarbon being less than half the total pressure at a total pressure of one atmosphere or more and less than 10 inches mercury at a total pressure below one atmosphere, and in the presence of a metal, other than silver, gold or trans-uranic element, or an oxide, hydroxide or salt thereof. Preferred hydrocarbons are butenes and methylbutenes which yield butadiene and isoprene. The molar ratio of oxygen to hydrocarbon may be 0.25-5: 1 and of bromine 0.001-0.5: 1, the bromine-liberating material being bromine, hydrogen bromide or an organic bromide. Flow rates of hydrocarbon of 0.25-4 vol/vol/hour and contact times of 0.01 second to several minutes are used. Many catalysts are specified, metal halides and phosphates are particularly preferred. Where the catalyst is a metal, e.g. stainless steel, this may form the reaction chamber walls.
