976,852. Valves. THOMPSON BROS. (BILSTON) Ltd., J. R. COOMBES, and J. H. E. DAVIES. Nov. 26, 1963 [Dec. 11, 1962], No. 46751/62. Heading F2V. A valve comprises a rotatable spindle 16 having a radial pin 25. A plunger 26, slidable axially, is loaded by springs 33 towards the pin 25, the plunger being prevented from rotating by a spline on a housing 20 engaging a groove in the plunger. The plunger is provided with recesses 36, 37 which receive the pin 25 in the closed and open positions. The housing is provided with a keyhole for a key 38 comprising a shank 39 which encircles the spindle, a bit 40 and a notch 41 which extends over an angle equal to the angle between the outer sides of the recesses 36,37. To open the valve the key is inserted through the housing and inward pressure causes the bit 40 to depress the plunger 26. Rotation of the key causes the side of notch 41 to rotate the spindle through the pin 25 and the key rides up a cam surface 47 on the housing so that the pin is engaged by the recess 37 in the fully open position. To close the valve the key is rotated in the opposite direction and moves inwards as the bit moves along the surface 47 and when the plunger 26 is depressed sufficiently to release the pin 25, the spindle is rotated by a spring loading (not shown) to the valve closed position. As shown, the recesses 36, 37 may be diametrical recesses and the pin 25 extends on opposite sides of the spindle, the groove 41 on the key is also duplicated. The plunger 26 preferably surrounds an obturator plunger 27 which prevents tampering with the lock. The spindle is described as actuating a hinged valve.
