976,802. Reactors. LICENTIA PATENTVERWALTUNGS-G.m.b.H. Feb. 3, 1961 [Feb. 4, 1960], No. 4165/61. Heading G6C. In a heterogeneous nuclear reactor, at the zones between the separate portions of the fuel, the excess of moderator over fuel causes a large thermal neutron flux with consequent overheating. This effect is avoided by the accommodation of absorber material at the joint, 1, between two fuelrod sections 2. The absorber may be either a cylinder 5 or a sphere 6. In a modification, not shown, the absorbing body is formed of concentric cylinders of materials having different neutron capture cross-sections to correspond with changes in the fuel characteristic during its consumption. A high neutron scattering coefficient material may be accommodated near the absorber.
