Abstract
976,678. Electron beam apparatus. STAUFFER CHEMICAL CO. Jan. 14,1963 [Jan.15, 1962], No. 1506/63. Heading H1D. In an electron beam furnace one or more elongated electron guns 25 project ribbon - shaped beams 24 through slits 44 in shield member 40 into barrelshaped magnetic fields produced by magnets 30, the magnetic fields serving to converge and reduce the widths of the beams while curving them on to the surface 16a of the material to be treated, as shown dripping into a mould 12. The magnets 30, one for each beam, are U-shaped with converging polepieces 32. The ends of the polepieces are also rounded. The shield 40 forms the bottom of a heat shield 48 which is provided with windows 56 to aid in the pumping of the apparatus. The windows 56 are provided with vapour condensing and heat conserving vanes or baffles 58. The shield 40 and the polepieces 32 may be water-cooled. The shield 40 is at the potential of the anode 28. The cathode filaments 26 may be elongated rods or hairpin shaped.
