To measure the absorptivity of a material such as paper or textiles the material is held in clamps 15,16,17 and liquid is applied to a point of the material, e.g. by dosing apparatus 14, and the time taken for liquid to spread to contacts 11, preferably of arcuate form connected in an oscillating circuit connected to an oscilloscope is measured. A fan 13 may be provided so that the material may be dried and the drying time also measured. The liquid may be supplied by means other than a dropper. The liquid retentivity of emulsions or suspensions may be compared by measuring their absorptivity on the same material.
