Abstract

976,148. Steam regenerative accumulators. H. BERGER. Sept. 29, 1961 [Oct. 19, 1960], No. 35363/61. Heading F4A. A steam accumulator comprises a hollow chamber having walls which are impervious to water vapour and disposed within the earth, with its walls in contact with the earth, at a depth such that the surrounding earth will withstand an internal pressure of at least 15 atmospheres absolute, and preferably 100 atmospheres absolute, applied to it through the walls. As shown a cylindrical chamber 2 with its axis horizontal is disposed at a depth h, say 450 metres below the surface of the earth and is connected to the surface by a channel 3. Superheated steam is forced through a pipe 1 into the bottom of the chamber whilst steam is supplied from the top of the chamber e.g. to a turbine via a pipe 4. A number of chambers such as 2 may be arranged star-fashion around one vertical shaft 3. In order to perform repairs, a closable access (not shown) may be provided in a wall 6 sealing off the chamber 2.
