Abstract
976,019. Air cooled apparatus for condensing vapours. HAPPEL G.m.b.H., [trading as GEA LUFTKUHLERGESELLSCHAFT HAPPEL G.m.b.H. & CO. K.G.]. Feb. 12, 1963, No. 5761/63. Heading B1B. In an air-cooled apparatus for condensing vapours, e.g. the exhaust steam from a turbine, comprising a plurality of tubular downflow condensers 7 connected by pipes 11a to the lower ends of a plurality of tubular reflux condensers 14 at least one fan is provided to cool the downflow condensers 7, and at least one fan 17 is provided to cool the reflux condensers 14, the fans 9 and 17 being controlled independently of one another. The exhaust steam from the turbine passes into distributing pipes 4, which are connected to the upper headers 6 of the downflow condensers 7 via lines 5. The steam passes down the tubes 8 of condenser 7, which are cooled by the air flow from fans 9, and the major portion of steam condenses. The condensate flows through pipes 11a and 11b into a receiver. The uncondensed steam from condensers 7 passes via pipes 11a a and headers 15 into reflux condensers 14, where it is completely condensed, the condensate formed flowing back into pipes 11a to join the main flow of condensate. The upper headers of reflux condensers 11 are connected to an air-suction device 18, such as a steam ejector, so that any oxygen in the steam entering condensers 14 is removed. Thermostats 20, inserted in the lower headers 10 of the downflow condensers or in the condensate collecting pipes 11a, are used to reduce or switch off the power supply to fans 9 when the temperature of the condensate falls below a certain predetermined value. Fans 9 are switched on again when the temperature of the condensate reaches an upper predetermined limit. Fans 17 run continuously as long as the turbine is in operation.
