975,669. Gear-cutting. FABRIQUE DE MACHINES MIKRON S.A. April 16, 1963 [May 11, 1962], No. 14972/63. Headings B3K and B3T. A method of hobbing gears consists in cutting the teeth on the gear on both upward and downward traverse strokes of the hob with infeed between the strokes. The hob 36 is carried in a head 31 adjustable angularly on a flange 22 on a sleeve 20 movable axially by hydraulic means between stops 29, 30 and guided by a rod 24. A motor 37 rotates a pulley 38 to rotate the hob through gears 41, 45, 46, 48, 49 and the work through gears 50-70 including a differential gear 64. The hob slide 14 is traversed by a screw 81 driven through gears 71-78 including reversing gearing 82-86 controlled by an hydraulically - operated clutch 87. The workpiece speed is adjusted on reversal of traverse by gears 89-92 which drive on to the differential housing 64 and which are chosen according to the helix angle of the gear. The speed of traverse of the tool can be reduced for finishing.
