Abstract
974,990. Rolling leaf-springs. ROCKWELLSTANDARD CORPORATION. May 21, 1963 [June 26, 1962], No. 20131/63. Heading B3M. Apparatus for roll tapering a blank to form a leaf-spring of predetermined longitudinal contour comprises means for supporting a metal blank to be rolled and for horizontally moving the blank, and a forming roll which is positively driven about a horizontal fixed axis at rightangles to the direction of movement of the blank and which is vertically adjustable to roll the blank to a desired contour. A carriage 36, Figs. 1 and 2, is slidably mounted by bearing surfaces 26 and 39 and adjustable blocks 30 on the bed 18 of the machine and is reciprocated by an hydraulic piston 48. Die blocks 60 and 62 and cam blocks 70 confine a block 68 within the carriage 36, the blocks being press fitted or adjustably clamped in the carriage. A roll 76 and two cam followers 73, all of the same diameter, are fixedly mounted on a driven shaft 81, the bearings 78 of the shaft being attached to an hydraulic piston 86 to allow vertical adjustment of the roll. The bearings 78 move in vertical guides on the machine frame, the guides on one side of the machine being adjustable. From the position shown in Fig. 1 the carriage is moved to the left and, as the cam followers are pressed against the cam blocks 70, the blank is tapered to the same profile as the blocks. The carriage is returned to its central position and the other half of the blank is similarly rolled. Alternatively, rolling can start at one end of the blank and be in one step. Spring- urged pressure rollers 91 which act on the blank, prevent one end of the blank from lifting as the other end is rolled. The die blocks 60 and 62 which confine the block can, if desired, be integral. In an alternative embodiment, Fig. 4, the cam followers and roll 76 are formed as a single roll and the cam blocks 70 form confining surfaces for the blank. The carriage is driven by gearwheels 118 and is supported by a roller 126, or, if desired, is reciprocated as before on bearing surfaces. The speeds of the roll 76 and carriage are synchronized to avoid slipping of the roll on the blank. U.S.A. Specification 2,775,152 is referred to.
