A silencer comprises a plurality of rings R defining a central duct and an outer annular duct connected respectively to inlet and outlet, or vice versa, the gas flowing from the central duct through openings O 1 , O 2 , in the rings to the outer duct leading to outlet F, or vice versa. The rings R may have a non-circular cross-section and they may be suspended resiliently to assist breaking up of ice forming thereon when used with compressed air tools.
