Abstract

A process for dyeing or printing textile, especially cellulose, materials with a mixture of dyestuffs comprises applying thereto (a) a dye containing at least one -A-Z group wherein A is an 0 or S atom or an -NY- group, wherein Y is H or an alkyl radical which may be substituted or a cycloalkyl radical, and Z is a heterocyclic ring containing at least one <FORM:0973906/D1-D2/1> group attached to A through one of its C atoms and which carries on one of its C atoms a group <FORM:0973906/D1-D2/2> wherein R1 and R2 are each methyl groups and R3 a possibly substituted aliphatic hydrocarbon radical or at least two of R1, R2 or R3 are joined or fused together with the N atom to form a heterocyclic ring or rings, provided that the said 4 degree ammonium group is free of sulphonic acid groups, and (b) a dye containing at least one -A-Z1 group wherein A is as above and Z1 is a heterocyclic ring as above and attached as above which carries at least one halogen, e.g. chlorine or bromine, atom attached to a C atom of the ring. The dyestuff mixture preferably contains at least 50%, particularly 75-90% by weight of dyestuff (b). A preferred mixture contains dyestuffs of the formulae <FORM:0973906/D1-D2/3> and <FORM:0973906/D1-D2/4> wherein R1, R2, R3 and Y have the above meanings, D is a dyestuff residue containing at least one water-solubilising group and W is a methoxy, amino or substituted amino group which is preferably a sulphonated anilino group. The preferred 4 degree ammonium group has the formula <FORM:0973906/D1-D2/5> The dyestuff mixtures are preferably applied to cellulose materials, e.g. cotton fabrics, in conjunction with treatment with an acid-binding agent. Examples of dyeing with monoazo and anthraquinone dyes are given.
