Abstract
973,056. Boiler furnace walls. SULZER FRERES S.A. Oct. 26, 1962 [Dec. 1, 1961], No. 40633/62. Heading F4B. A lining for a boiler furnace wall comprises hollow elements which carry a heat-absorbing medium, an expansion joint bridging a gap between two adjacent elements, and a tube in the gap spaced from adjacent elements by di nces each sufficient to accommod ate maximum expansion of the adjacent element, the elements being formed by at least one meander-shaped tube band. Fig. 3 illustrates a tubulous wall lining comprising similar meandershaped tube bands 34, 35, 36 and 37, the bands 35 and 36 having a common inlet header 38 and outlet header 40. The tube bands are arranged so that gaps on one tube band align with gaps on the adjacent tube bands, thus allowing one expansion joint tube to be used for two gaps as shown, for example, by the tube 47 in the gaps 44 and 44<SP>1</SP>. The tube 47 is contained in a total of four gaps, bent at 47<SP>1</SP> for resilience, connected to the headers 38 and 40 and fixed at points 56 and 57. Other expansion joint tubes are similarly fitted. The joint detail is illustrated at Fig. 2 where fins 28 are welded to the joint tube 11 and fins 27 and guide members 29 to the lower and upper tubes of the upper and lower tube band runs respectively, the finned tubes and alternate tubes of the tube band runs being supported by the members 24 whose notches 33 receive lugs 23 on the support tube 19. Guide rods 26 are welded on all tubes of the tube band runs, except the upper tube of each run. The metal skin 31 and the insulating layer 32 are thus protected from furnace radiation. At points where tubes are bent through 180 degrees the dimensions of the expansion gaps and bridging fins may be reduced to dimensions smaller than those at 90 degrees bends to relieve potentially high stresses. The tube bands may be fabricated from two corrugated sheets welded together, Fig. 5 (not shown).
