Abstract

20-Keto-16 (17)-dehydropregnane derivatives are prepared by treating pseudosapogenins with ozone in the presence of a neutral carboxylic ester, a halogenated organic solvent, a tertiary amine basic solvent or a fatty acid solvent to form an ozonide, treating the ozonides with triphenyl phosphine, sodium borohydride, lithium aluminium hydride or sodium sulphite to form 16-acyloxy -20- keto-pregnanes, and treating the last named compounds with a saponifying agent. A product containing a 3-hydroxy group may be 3-acylated as required. Suitable solvents that may be used for the reaction with ozone are pyridine, ethyl acetate, chloroform or acetic acid. In the examples D 5,16-pregnadien-3 b -ol and the corresponding 3-acetate are prepared from pseudodiosgenin acetate; D 16-allopregnene-3 b -ol-12, 20-dione is prepared from pseudo-hecogenin acetate; and D 16-pregnen-3 b -ol-20-one and the corresponding 3-acetate are prepared from pseudosarsapogenin acetate.
