Abstract

Compositions for the production of shaped articles of polyoxymethylenes or copolyoxymethylenes having an enhanced affinity for dyestuffs comprise a metal-containing polymeric substance in which the metallic element is combined as an integral part of the structure of the polymeric substance. The metal may be zinc, magnesium, calcium, aluminium or titanium. The polymeric substance may be a polyester, polyurethane, polycarbonate, polyamide, polyanhydride or mixture thereof, and may be prepared by reaction of a metal salt of a weak volatile acid with a polymer or the components used for making a polymer. The compositions may be formed into films, fibres, filaments, mouldings and extrusions. In examples (I) zinc acetate, ethylene glycol, dimethyl terephthalate and dimethyl isophthalate are heated, and the product added a 99/1 copolymer of formaldehyde and ethylene oxide which is melt spun into filaments stretched and dyed; and (II) zinc acetate and 11-aminoundecanoic acid are heated, and the product added to a 99/1 copolymer of formaldehyde and ethylene oxide which is melt spun into filaments, stretched and dyed.ALSO:Shaped articles of compositions comprising polyoxymethylenes or copolyoxymethylenes and metal-containing polymeric substances in which the metallic element is combined on an integral part of the structure of the polymeric substance are dyed with disperse, mordant, basic and acid dyestuffs. The metal may be zinc, magnesium, calcium, aluminium or titanium, and the polymeric substance a polyester, polyurethane, polycarbonate, polyamide, polyanhydride or mixture thereof. The articles may be fibres, films, filaments, mouldings or extrusions. In examples filaments melt spun from compositions comprising 99/1 copolymers of formaldehyde and ethylene oxide and the reaction products of (I) zinc acetate, ethylene glycol, dimethyl terephthalate and dimethyl isophthalate are dyed with mordant, disperse and basic dyestuffs; and of (II) zinc acetate and 11-aminoundecanoic acid are dyed with mordant, disperse, basic and acid dyestuffs.
